Last updated on April 11th, 2023 by A1 True Jobs

How to use Meta Description Tag on your website? How do you explain to your visitor in only 2 or 3 phrases what they can expect on your website? You use the so-called meta description tag. Google speaks of Meta Description, Meta Descriptions, or Meta description problems.

Almost all the major search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo Fast, and Altavista will use your description tag. You have direct input on the way people will see your website in the list of results. And because you control this, you can influence the click-behavior.

How to use Meta Description Tag?

What is the Meta Description Tag? If you have some knowledge of codes and HTML you'll be able to type the following line ( the meta description tag ) in the head-part of the source of your web-page.

<meta name="description" content="text">

Replace the word "text" with a short description of your web-page. Use no more than 200 characters. This short line of text will appear 1-on-1 in the search results. Create and add a different meta description tag for every page.

Note: Some experts claim meta tags are of no use. In their tests they focus on the meta tags keywords and make one big mistake: the meta tags have to be relevant.

Bogus words like "jpgkdudkfiddkdid", misspelled words, your competitor's name in the keywords are indeed useless. But if you create your meta tags with care, search-engines will use your tags one-on-one. A better HTML page title and an optimization of your meta description tag give a higher CTR.

Search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing show meta tags in their search results. You perform a search task by filling out:

  • (A) certain keywords. The results you will get is
  • (B) the title tag and
  • (C) the small text item, the description tag.

Example of a meta description

Do you want to change your site's title and description in search results? The search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing created short "snippets" and is completely automated. It takes into account both the content of a page as well as references to it that appear on the web. Add the following meta tag in the HTML source of your web-page:

<meta name="description" content="On our website, you will find all the information about meta tags, search engine optimization, and submitting your website to the search engines.">

You must use the keywords you want your site to be found under, in your meta description tag. The more frequently a search engine spider finds a certain word on your website and in your meta tags, it values that word as important. Your site will be positioned higher in the search index.

Try to give each page of your website a relevant title, relevant description, and relevant keywords that correspond with the text on your website. A visitor will find the exact information within your website, on the correct page.

A well-formed description tag will be shown directly by e.g. Yahoo, Bing, and Google. That's why the description tag is also named the Google meta description or snippet.

Where should you add this meta description tag?

You may add the meta tags in all of your web-pages, so not only on the first index page. Make sure that on every page relevant meta tags are added. Add keywords and phrases that are relevant and correspond to the text on that specific page. It might be a lot of work to add specific meta tags to each page but you will notice in time that it works!
